Here at Street End Farm, we are constantly reviewing our environmental position. Although not an organic farm, we do try to use as little chemicals as possible, favouring other farming methods like crop rotation and companion cropping to manage pests and other risks to the harvest.
Being a mail-order company, the issue we have is getting the balance right between strong, durable, weather-resistant packaging and our environmental responsibility.
We want your bird seed products to arrive safely but remain protected during delivery.
If there is any damage to the product, that would mean a return of it to us and a new one sent out, adding further transportation mileage and landfill waste to the equation.
This is why we use plastic bags for our seed; it would be all too easy for paper bags - even very strong ones - to split during transit or in wet weather. The good news is that our bags can be recycled! They carry a number 5 recycling symbol like the one below, which some councils collect at the roadside. Usually, if you can put yoghurt pots in your recycle bin, you can put our bags in too.
If your council doesn't collect number 5 at the roadside, you may be able to take them to a local recycling centre, or failing that, why not post them back to us to recycle! We subscribe to a farm recycling scheme for waste plastic - it is kept in the UK, sorted, pelletised and turned into farm essentials such as fence posts, hen houses, stiles etc. Please send your used bags back to us at Street End Farm, Ashton Lane, Bishops Waltham, SO32 1FS. We will pay the postage cost of the returned bags by way of a credit voucher - so the returns process is cost-neutral to you! Please just collect a minimum of 5 bags to send back to us.
They also make handy garden waste or rubble sacks, as they are really very strong. Also, if you buy larger quantities of feed at a time, then that creates significantly less packaging waste and transportation than buying lots of smaller bags - but only if you can store and manage our larger bags, of course.
Did you know you can come and buy direct from our farm? If you live in the southern Hampshire area or are passing by, why not pop in and see us? You'll receive a discount of 15%, and we can save significantly on packaging.
