The birds love this too! It’s fun to look out and see the blackbirds eating the squirrels’ food while the squirrels pinch the birdseed! The magpies love to swipe in for a few peanuts but if the squirrels get there first they take as many of the nuts as they can and scamper off to hide them I love watching the interactions between them all. Now I just need to find a way to keep the cats out of the garden .

What do squirrels like to eat?
Squirrels are known to eat a wide variety of foods including nuts, seeds, fungi, fruit, vegetables and occasionally even meat. Their favourite nuts include acorns, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds.
Nuts with shells are particularly good for squirrels as extracting the nut gives them exercise and helps to sharpen their teeth!

When is the best time to feed squirrels?
The best time to feed squirrels is actually during the summer months when their natural food sources like berries and nuts are running low. However, you can feed squirrels all year round as long as you are mindful not to overfeed them in periods where natural food is plentiful.

Where should I put my squirrel feeder?
The best place to put a squirrel feeder is close to a tree or sturdy fence and around 5 feet off the ground. This should allow for easy observation and give the squirrels a safe feeding area they can easily access. Ideally, keep the squirrel feeder away from bird feeders to avoid competition.

How can I attract red squirrels to my garden?
More than three quarters of red squirrels are now found in Scotland, with the only thriving red squirrel populations in England being located on the Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island where there are no grey squirrels. However, there are small populations of red squirrels in Cumbria, the Isles of Scilly, Merseyside, Northumberland, areas of North Wales and Perthshire.
To attract red squirrels to your garden, you can plant some of the trees and shrubs they are particularly fond of. These include: crab apple, hawthorn, holly, rosehip, brambles, raspberry, dog rose and wild cherry.
You can also offer unsalted peanuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, walnuts and sunflower seeds.
