How to Feed Squirrels
Like birds, squirrels sometimes need supplementary food from humans in order to survive harsh winters and periods of food scarcity - plus, it's pretty entertaining to watch them play and scamper around! However, there are some key points to consider if you are planning on putting out food for your local squirrels:
- Squirrels that have become accustomed to humans may lose their natural fear and become aggressive when seeking food.
- Make sure you stick to natural squirrel food like nuts and seeds, avoiding processed or sugary items.
- Always feed only small amounts at a time and not too frequently to avoid overfeeding.
- Avoid getting too close to squirrels when feeding so that they can maintain their natural behaviour.
