Hedgehog Homes

At Really Wild Bird Food, we stock a selection of high-quality hedgehog homes that will save you the trouble of having to make your own!

Helping your local hogs find a safe space to live and hibernate is very important, particularly in recent years, as hedgehog populations have been declining due to habitat loss from urbanisation and deforestation.

In order to avoid the hazards of modern life (such as cars, strimmers and tools) as well as their traditional predators, hedgehogs need a safe haven in which to stay warm and dry. Providing a comfortable and safe hedgehog home is a great way to welcome these elusive creatures to your outdoor space!

Help Your Local Hedgehogs

Providing your local hedgehogs with a dry, safe place to sleep is the best and safest way you can assist them. Hedgehog homes can even serve as a safe space for mothers to give birth and nurse their young. So, by providing a simple hedgehog home, you can foster the growth of the hedgehog population and support future generations to come!

It's reccomended that you don't put food inside the hedgehog home, except to draw them in initially. Instead, set up a separate feeding station where the hedgehog can retreive food.

And remember - never clean a hedgehog home that has hedgehogs inside of it! Make sure that it is completely empty before you attempt to clean it. This means that you will want to leave this task for a season other than winter, and avoid Hedgehog breeding season.

Hedgehog Home FAQS

  • Where Should I Put My Hedgehog Home?
  • Ideally, place the hedgehog home in a quiet, shady and sheltered spot in your garden, away from human or pet activity. The best locations are usually under thick vegetation, behind a shed or against a wall, fence or hedge.

You can also place the house on an elevated surface to prevent water from entering during heavy rains. It is also recommended that you cover the outside of the house with leaves or soil, but make sure the extrance hole and ventilation pump are clear.
