Bird Profile - Siskins
What is a Siskin Bird?
Siskins are lively finches, recognisable by their forked tail. You can also spot a male Siskin by looking for a yellow-green body and black crown.
A Siskin's latin name is Spinus spinus. You might hear them called the Common Siskin, or the European Siskin, even though many of them reside here in the UK! We do get more of them each winter though, as they migrate from Europe.

Siskin Birds: More Information
Siskins are a monotypic bird species, meaning that they are one of a kind! You won't find any subspecies of this bird, so this is the only kind of Siskin you'll hear be discussed. Even if a different name is used, like the Eurasian Siskin, this is the only bird being referred to.
These birds are renowned for their strange migration pattern, visiting the UK in winter. Though it has been suggested that climate changes or food availability might be key reasons for this habit, we aren't entirely certain. Whatever the reason, they are a lovely, brightly-coloured addition to UK gardens!
What do Siskins eat?
Siskins mainly eat seeds, like tree seeds and sunflower seeds. They also eat peanuts! A Siskin's beak is actually an indicator of its feeding habits! It's thin and durable, to help it pick out seeds.
You may see them in your garden all year round, though more commonly in winter in specific areas of the UK. Of course, you'll have a better chance of spotting one if you put Siskin food into your bird feeder or onto your bird table.
