What Do Siskins Eat?

What Do Siskins Eat?

Siskins are lively finches, recognisable by their forked tail. Thanks to their small, pointed bills, siskins are well-apt for extracting seeds, with their particular favourite snacks being sunflower seeds, niger seeds and seeds from alder, birch, spruce and pine trees.

During summer, siskins are also known to supplement their diet with insects and peanuts in order to feed their young. They are highly sociable birds and are happy to eat from a wide variety of bird feeders alongside other birds.

About Siskins

  • Siskins are a monotypic bird species, meaning that they are one of a kind! You won't find any subspecies of this bird, so this is the only kind of Siskin you'll hear be discussed.

  • These birds are renowned for their strange migration pattern, visiting the UK in winter. Though it has been suggested that climate changes or food availability might be key reasons for this habit, we aren't entirely certain. Whatever the reason, they are a lovely, brightly-coloured addition to UK gardens!

  • Siskins build very neat nests, usually high up in conifer trees and made from twigs, lichen and feathers.

  • Siskins are known for their acrobatic feeding behaviour, often seen hanging upside down to access seeds!

  • 400,000 pairs of siskin are thought to breed in the UK each year.
