Bird Seed Feeder FAQs
- Why do small birds throw seed out of the feeder?
There are many reasons birds may be throwing seed out of the seed feeder. Perhaps the most obvious explanation is, if you have put out a seed mix, birds will often dig through the mix to find the ingredient they prefer.
There are many simple ways to prevent spilled seed – you can use a seed tray to catch any spilled seed, use a no mess bird feed to ensure that any spilled seed doesn’t germinate, or if your local birds are exceptionally picky, try switching to a differentseed mix to one they will be less likely to throw.
- How long does bird seed stay fresh?
When stored correctly (in a clean, air tight container – ideally a bird food storage bin), bird seed can last up to 6-12 months, depending on the type of seed. Be sure to store your bird seed somewhere dry and out of reach of rodents/insects to ensure it stays fresher for longer.
- How often do you need to refill a bird seed feeder?
The answer to this question can depend on a number of factors, but here are a few signs it might be time to refill your bird seed feeder:
- Your seed feeder is currently empty
- It has rained and your old bird seed is damp
- The current bird seed has been left in the feeder for over a week and needs replacing
